Join PyLadies and Women in Big Data for a hands-on tutorial on creating compelling and interactive visualizations of geographic data in Python. PyLadies organizers Emma Freeman and Sylvia Tran will lead an interactive coding workshop with Folium and Bokeh, two popular visualization libraries.

All people and levels are welcome! Please note all attendees should abide by the PyLadies Code of Conduct

Please bring: a fully charged laptop if you have one. You can get a head start by downloading the dataset we will be working with, here

6:00 P.M.: Check in and mingle

About the speakers:
Emma Freeman is a Data Scientist at TouchNote and was previously an instructor for the Data Science Immersive program at General Assembly. Emma holds a Master’s degree in Environmental Science and has ten years of experience conducting data analysis for environmental science and policy, with a background in marine biology and scientific research.

Sylvia Tran is a Data Scientist at OpenDrives. She was previously a TA and graduate of General Assembly’s Data Science Immersive program. Sylvia was formerly a Director at Wells Fargo Capital Finance, and has 10 years of experience in business risk analysis, and financing mergers & acquisitions. She holds a B.S. in Applied Mathematics from UCLA.

Parking: Please join us at the University of Southern California by navigating to our McCarthy Way parking structure at the intersection of McCarthy Way and Figueroa St. in Los Angeles, CA. (Please see attached USC campus map for parking and venue location)

There is a parking charge of $12 that you can pay at the gate and we encourage you to arrive early if you would like to dine at local eateries across the street at the intersection of Figueroa and Jefferson or Figueroa and Exposition.

Location: We encourage you to use Google Maps to find Popovich Hall #110 or you can use the USC Interactive Campus Map ( to navigate by foot to our location at the Pardee Way entrance. There will be no food/drink (except water) available or allowed in this training space due to campus regulation.
