04U Engineering Fall 2023 Out for Undergrad Engineering Conference

My name is Haroon Farrukh (he/they) and I am an Admissions Director for the Fall 2023 Out for Undergrad Engineering Conference, a conference specifically dedicated to empowering LGBTQ2+ undergraduate engineering students. I graduated from University of Maryland, College Park with my BS (’22) in Civil and Environmental Engineering, and currently work as a Engineering Project Specialist at Stantec.

Every year, O4U hosts a weekend-long professional development conference for high-achieving, high-potential LGBTQ+ undergraduate students who are studying or interested in engineering. If you are not familiar with Out for Undergrad (O4U) or the O4U Engineering Conference, you can learn more about it on the website here: https://www.outforundergrad.org/.

In efforts to build a diverse class for this year’s O4U Engineering Conference, we would love to start an early connection to help bring in more applicants/attendees from your University/College. The Round 3  deadline of May 7, 2023 is approaching soon!

If you have access to a mailing list or social media to reach your undergraduate students, please feel free to use the blurb I have included below to post/send along:

Out for Undergrad (O4U) Engineering Conference deadlines (all at 11:59 PM PST)
Round 1: Sunday, March 12th, 2023
Round 2: Sunday, April 9th, 2023
Round 3: Sunday, May 7th, 2023

*It is encouraged that students apply as soon as possible, as O4U Engineering has historically selected more students during Rounds 1 and 2.

The Out for Undergrad Engineering Conference will be held in person in St. Paul, MN, during October 20-22, 2023. It should be noted that this conference is geared towards serving students that identify as LGBTQ2+ and plan on pursuing a career in engineering, whether it be industry or academia. Students are admitted to attend the conference on a rolling basis. Flights, hotel, and conference costs are covered entirely by O4U.

Here is a little more about the conference:

  • Out for Undergrad is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization designed to help high-achieving LGBTQ2+ undergrads reach their full potential.
  • LGBTQ2+ engineering students will have the opportunity to discuss being out in the engineering industry and hear from professionals who are out in their careers.
  • Students will network with LGBTQ2+ peers and professionals from top engineering companies from a wide range of industries across the country.
  • Students will have the opportunity to find LGBTQ2+ mentors in their field.
  • Sponsoring companies will recruit students for jobs and internships at the career fair and throughout the conference. Some company sponsors in the past have included: General Motors, Medtronic, Clorox, ABB, Stantec, Ecolab, Barr, university graduate programs, and more!
