Evaluating Job Offers
If you need help with the job application process or offer review, VCC is here to help! Please schedule an appointment on Handshake with a Career Advisor to discuss your options.
Before you make your final decision, start with the tips below to help guide you:
Offer Evaluation Process
- Begin with assessing yourself, your needs, and desires.
- Evaluate the company’s current position in the industry and learn all about the organization.
- Consider all benefits, not just salary.
- Create a budget to assess whether you can afford to accept a job based on your monthly expenses and lifestyle.
Evaluating Multiple Offers
- If considering multiple offers, prioritize what you seek in an internship/job and weigh all aspects.
- Consider work-life balance, commute, salary, supervisor, benefits, flexible hours, available promotions, and the organization’s future.
Negotiate the Offer(s)
- Review information on how to evaluate, negotiate, and accept an offer.
- Please attend one of our upcoming workshops on Job Offer & Salary Negotiation or view a pre-recorded session on Handshake
- Join us for our upcoming workshop on Accepting Job Offers on Monday, March 4th at 4 pm; RTH 211 or Virtual. To register: Visit Handshake < Events < Career Center Guidance Events < Search Viterbi workshops
Once You Accept an Offer, It Is Extremely Important to:
- Remove yourself from the internship/job search.
- Politely decline all remaining offers by notifying the recruiters.
- Cancel all remaining interviews.
Reneging, or declining an offer after accepting, has serious long-term effects. Professional and ethical interactions with employers are expected from all USC students, and there are consequences, personal and University-wide, to reneging. Industries are small, and recruiters are well connected – you could potentially harm your professional reputation resulting in limited opportunities for yourself and fellow Trojans in the future.
Beyond personal consequences, students who renege on an offer will lose access to Handshake and RSVPing to Viterbi events. For additional details, please review the On-Campus Recruitment Agreement.
