Frequently Asked Questions
THIS PAGE PRESENTS QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE ABOUT OUR PROGRAMS AND SERVICES.
IF YOU CAN'T FIND WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR, FEEL FREE TO COMPLETE OUR FACULTY CONTACT FORM HERE.
Students can look for positions on
Viterbi Career Gateway, visiting the organization’s website directly and reviewing a large variety of online job sites such as
Indeed.com,
Glassdoor.com and
LinkedIn. Furthermore, we suggest that students do not limit their search to online job postings and utilize their personal networks to obtain a referral. We also encourage students to take advantage of the various
networking opportunities on-campus.
We suggest all students start looking for employment opportunities as soon as they feel ready. The majority of employers start to recruit during the fall semester. In addition, employment opportunities that require special clearances can take place one to two years before the actual position start date. Students who start their search early are more likely to find internships and full-time positions post-graduation. It is important for students to learn a significant amount of career information before they start applying to positions. We suggest students review and utilize the career plan we created along with a variety of other online tools located on our
website.We provide a variety of
programs and resources that help students with their career development. However, the student must take the initiative to visit our
center and attend various
events each semester. We greatly appreciate all faculty who encourage their students to
obtain career advising or suggest student attendance at our
events.
Have discussions with your students on how their projects and class assignments prepare them for internships and full-time positions. In addition, you can utilize any of the class assignment templates we provide to faculty or complete our assignment contact form to develop a customized assignment.
A fair and equitable salary will depend on the field, industry, location of the position, student’s experience, start-up vs. for-profit employer, etc. It is best to utilize
salary calculators and research the organizations to understand the appropriate salary. We also suggest that students consult with our
Career Advisers to establish a strategy on how to evaluate and negotiate their job offers.
All International students will need to register for an internship course and and obtain course credit, regardless if the position is paid or not.
Domestic students are not required to obtain course credit unless their particular education program or the company they are working for requires it.
The amount of employment opportunities varies based on the needs of employers and their industry. Viterbi Career Gateway updates jobs and internships daily, Monday through Friday. Additionally, our department has a dedicated staff member to conduct outreach with employers who hire engineers. If you have any company contacts and/or suggestions for companies you want your students to connect with, please complete our
Faculty Contact Form to make the referral.
When an employer contacts you, you may deal with the employer directly if you are interested in developing a relationship. If you are not interested, do not believe the employer is the right fit for your students, classes, or research, or if you wish to have assistance with an employer, please refer the employer to our
office. You can also share our information with the employer by directing them to our
website. In addition, we have a dedicated staff person to work directly with employers for recruitment and student engagement requests.
We believe that faculty connecting students directly to employers is an excellent way to help students improve their networking skills and increasing their chances of landing an internship or job. However, faculty should be aware of the
legal and ethical considerations before they provide student referrals. We suggest that in addition to, or instead of directly referring students to employers, that the employer posts the position on
Viterbi Career Gateway. We review each position for compliance with Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and National Association of Colleges and Employers
(NACE) principles. Furthermore, this process will open up employment opportunities for other qualified students.
Please complete our
Faculty Contact Form and we will do our best to connect you with the desired employer.
If you have a contact or familiar with an employer you would like to attend our career fair, please complete our Faculty Contact Form to let us know. Keep in mind that the Engineering Career Fair requires employers to pay registration fees as well as actively recruiting for positions to attend the event. In addition, the hiring needs of an employer can change each semester and they attend recruiting events based on those needs.
There are several ways faculty can develop a partnership with us. We suggest that all faculty review the resources on this website and complete our Faculty Contact Form to discuss what kind of partnership or collaboration they are looking for. Career Connections is always looking for new ways to engage Viterbi students with professional development and opportunities to connect students with gainful employment.
We understand that your class time is valuable and encourage all faculty to either briefly mention verbally and or provide our information on your course syllabus as a resource.
We would be happy to share and market your event with students. Please complete our
Faculty Contact Form and provide us your marketing materials or request further assistance.
If you provide a list of your students, we can easily confirm if they came into our office. We highly suggest that you complete our
assignment contact form so we can best prepare for your assignment.
On-campus interviews are limited due to time and space constraints. There is often far more qualified and highly skilled students then interview sessions available. We encourage students to meet with a
Career Advisor and utilize our
various resources to improve their chances for future on-campus interviews.
We are currently providing Viterbi Alumni access to Viterbi Career Gateway once they create an Alumni Account on ConnectSC. If they would like to meet with a Career Advisor, the USC Career Center offers USC Alumni access to appointments. For more information please visit their website.
Please encourage your student to
contact us for further information. We will do our best to connect your student with Alumni or Employers.
